Illinois Department of Transportation set to repair potholes across the state

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. {KWQC} — Illinois Department of Transportation will repair potholes across state highways and interstates.

Due to the recent weather, it had an effect on the roads. Construction is expected to begin this weekend as maintenance crews will be patrolling and repairing potholes.

“We will be doing our best to make repairs as they develop, but we ask for your cooperation as well to ensure everyone’s safety,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “Potholes unfortunately can be anticipated to form as a result of the weather patterns at this time of year.”

Illinois Department of Transportation encourages the public to slow down, drive carefully, and use caution where work is being done.

“Pothole patching operations are work zones,” added Osman. “Please be alert for the orange IDOT trucks, reducing your speed and moving over so they have room to work.”

Brief lane closures are to be expected and motorists should allow for extra time while the pothole patching is underway.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, with the freezing temperatures, rain and heavy snow, potholes form when water gets underneath or into the pavement. During the thawing and freezing conditions, the moisture causes the surface to break, buckle or shift.

Illinois Department of Transportation says, “they are committed to patching potholes as quickly as possible.”
