State Police to Be on Lookout for Distracted Drivers

Illinois State Police will conduct an enforcement program against distracted driving in June in Pike, Sangamon and Adams counties.

Capt. Jody Huffman, commander of state police Troop 6, said the focus on distracted driving laws is meant to prevent injuries and death. Huffman said things like eating or drinking, sending a text message, or reaching for an object can increase the potential of a crash significantly.

Police remind drivers it is illegal to read, send or receive text messages or browse the internet while driving. Handheld electronic communication devices are prohibited, as well, and drivers under age 19 or anyone in a work or school zone are prohibited from using even hands-free devices.
